Food/Tech Trend 2015

Being fit and fab while on-the-go are still trends that will continue in 2015. However this year, we will see the rise of a different type of healthy snacks, form of sinless desserts, another superfood and adoption of restaurant payment apps.

Here are the 2015 food and foodtech trends to watch out for:

After Kale chips, broccoli chips will invade your kitchen. Right after New Year's, I was looking for Trader Joe's kale chips but instead found their new broccoli florets chips, which comes in a similar green packaging. I believe that this will be a bigger hit than kale for supermarkets because kale chips is easy to replicate at home, while broccoli chips takes longer and is harder to ensure the right amount of crispiness inside the oven.

A new superfood, moringa, will become a household name in the U.S. It has made the rounds on lifestyle magazines, tv spots and at your Whole Foods shelves. As reported here, Kuli Kuli, the first company to market moringa-based nutrition bars in the US, will pave the way for moringa's product diversification whether in a form of a bar, health drink or powder to enter your kitchen.

Cupcake in a jar, anyone? I've increasingly seen cheesecake, mud pies and cupcakes served in small glass jars. It might not have the same photogenic effect as a cupcake with spiral frosting topped with multi-color sprinkles, but the jars travel well and can be heated up in just a few seconds for those who like their desserts warm.

I know we've all gone through the experience of waiting to hail down a server for the check only to end up waiting again for the credit card to come back and sign the receipt. Fret not, restaurant payment apps, such as Cover, Dash, MyCheck and even Opentable, have started partnering up with restaurants in urban areas and POS systems to make waiting for and signing a dinner bill a thing of the past.
